This was when he wrote his first poem about the Land of the Midnight Sun called Alaska, Alaska - Home of the Free. Tohill instantly fell in love with not just the grandeur of the land and its wildlife but also with what he calls the Spirit of Alaska. He has been writing poems about and taking photographs of the splendors, hardships and every day life of Alaska ever since. Running rivers as a guide for years throughout the state has given him a unique perspective to work with.
