Product Overview

This checklist contains the common names, breeding status, and year round occupancy of the bird species that have been detected in and immediately adjacent to Denali National Park and Preserve (Denali NPP) on the north side of the Alaska Range as of 31 December 2022, and the common names of the 28 species that have been detected once or twice in the area. The 22 species that regularly occur in winter are highly adapted to the extreme temperatures, severe weather, and long dark days of winter. Similarly, the migratory species that spend the breeding season here are highly adapted to a migratory lifestyle and obtaining the resources they need to survive to enable them to return to their protected breeding areas in Denali NPP. This checklist does not provide information on relative abundance or habitat associations because the seasonal abundance of birds in this area varies greatly across space and time.

Denali NPP includes a diversity of bird habitats ranging from low elevation wetlands to high elevation alpine. Observing birds in this area requires patience, persistence, visiting different habitats in different seasons, and often being in the right place at the right time. Please stay away from occupied bird nests and exercise common sense and good birding practices to avoid creating stressful situations for birds. Phylogenetic sequence and common names follow the 2022 American Ornithological Society’s Checklist of North and Middle American Birds (https://checklist.americanornithology.org/taxa/).

Common names follow the 2023 American Ornithological Society’s Checklist of North and Middle American Birds. (https://checklist.americanornithology.org/taxa/).
