Prince William Sound

Mountains rise straight up from water’s edge surrounding Prince William Sound with a mantle of rock and ice. Its twenty tidewater glaciers calve into the Sound with gigantic splashes breaking the stillness with thunderous cracks and filling fjords with icy bergs. Here where land and sea meet with 3,500 miles of shoreline, marine life abounds. Between high tide and low is a feast of intertidal wealth. It is home for playful sea otters, whales, and seabirds, and herring and salmon. Prince William Sound sits at the heart of the Chugach National Forest the world’s northernmost forest.
