Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
Wild and remote, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge exemplifies wilderness, an area where the Earth and its community of life are untrammeled by humans. Caribou roam the valleys and mountainsides, arctic grayling over-winter in deep river pools and groups of musk oxen graze the tundra. The refuge is also home to grizzly and polar bears, lemmings, arctic foxes and thousands of migratory birds. Because of the large size and diverse habitats of the refuge, ecological processes continue free of human control and manipulation.
