Innoko National Wildlife Refuge

The Innoko National Wildlife Refuge is located in western Alaska on the homelands of the Doogh Hit’an and Deg Xit’an Athabascan people. Remote and isolated even by Alaska standards, the 3.8 million-acre refuge was established for the main purpose of conserving fish and wildlife populations and habitats in their natural diversity. As one of the most important waterfowl areas in Interior Alaska, the refuge’s vast lands comprise critical nesting and summer habitat for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl, including geese, ducks, loons and swans. Excellent habitat exists for moose, furbearers and fish species. Rich natural and cultural features of the refuge include traditional subsistence use, dramatic gold rush history and the iconic Iditarod National Historic Trail.
